2008 US National Cyclocross Championships Kansas City
Katie won last year not only because of power but because she demonstrated superior bike handling skills. This year it was all about power and climbing. Gould stayed with her until the first chicane at the top of the course, then could only watch as Compton rode away.
Mo Bruno-Roy avenged last season's debacle in the 30-34 race, riding away from an incredibly strong field that included Emily Van Meter, Anna Milkowski, and Josie Jacques-Maynes. While Mo excels in nasty conditions, she won despite not getting a single mud stain on her skinsuit (as you can see in the above photo)
Brandon Dwigth repeated as the 35-39 national champion. He was pushed fairly hard by Matt Kraus for a whille, but eventually Brandon broke away and soloed to victory.
Andy Jacques-Mayne made it two years in a row in the 30-34 field against nearly 90 racers. Andy got the hole shot and once he got a gap was never challenged for the lead..
Nick Weighall has been a revelation this season. Often he could be seen riding in the top ten of the Elite Men's field. It appears that he has a bright future in cyclocross. Equally impressive was Nick Keough, just 19 years old, who battled Weighall on every foot of the course. Keough will have two more tries at the U-23 championship in the coming years.

Kansas weather was a bit more hospitable this year but still provided some challenges. On Friday morning the course was so slick that very few Juniors made it around without crashing at least once. On Sunday just prior to the Elite races, the temperature dropped from 61 degrees to 20 degrees within an hour! Winds were gusting over 30 miles per hour. With the wind chill, it brought the temperature to near zero. Riders had difficulty shifting their bikes with frozen hands. Ryan Trebon was the class of the field on Sunday. The drier conditions made the course fast and non-technical. The climbing was much more significant this year, but Ryan just kept his bike in the big ring and powered his way to another national championship. The shocker of the day was seeing Jamey Driscoll ride to an impressive second place. The weekend before Jamey had won the New Engand Championship Series (where he had seven victories this season). Jamey seems to be the real deal.
Katie Compton won her fifth consecutive national championship in Kansas City, riding solo virtually the whole race. Even the vastly improved Georgia Gould could not stay with Katie for even a lap. Katie is now America's most accomplished cyclocross racer ever and represents our best hope for a world championship. In November she won the world cup race in Koksijde, Belgium after being forced off her bike for several weeks due to leg problems.
Ryan Trebon went straight to the front of the race and put the hurt on all the contenders with a crushing uphill pace. The race briefly came back together and Jesse Anthony threw down an attack on the pavement. Ryan did not panic but easily bridged back up to Anthony and Driscoll, then blew right by them both.
