| 2007 US National Cyclocross Championships Kansas City |
| Katie Compton, known for her sheer power, won this race because she demonstrated bike handling skills in adverse conditions that were superior to even the best mountain bikers. Rachael Lloyd closed the gap a bit during the last lap when Katie crashed, but Katie cruised comfortably to her fourth consecutive US National Championship |
| Jonathan Page rode a brilliant race, going to the front early and leaving the whole field behind. He appeared to be in a different class from everyone else until Todd Wells briefly caught him, and finally when Tim Johnson bridged the gap. Jon tangled up with a pole and course tape (shown above) causing a mechanical and forcing him to run to the pits. |
| Maureen Bruno-Roy was pitted against formidable competition in the Women's 30-34 race. At least a half dozen women could have won, but Mo excels in the snow and mud. Her ride was flawless, and even a determined Sally Annis could not match her pace. |
| Andy Jacques-Mayne completed an amazing comeback from what could have been season ending injuries by winning the Men's 30-34 race. He closed a significant gap to Grant Berry and then won a drag race on the pavement. His bride, Josie (The California Strawberry Girl) had one of her best races ever the previous day by finishing 2nd in the Women's 30-34 field. |
| Everyone expected Mark McCormack to battle defending champion Richard Feldman for the 30-35 championship. But once Mark dispatched Feldman, Brandon Dwight (shown leading above) overcame nearly a 30 second deficit to join McCormack. Shortly after this photo was taken, Mark tangled with a lapped rider and crashed. Dwight cruised on to victory in a heavy snowstorm. |

| Kansas was like a frozen block of ice during the morning hours, then
turned very muddy in the afternoons. Deep frozen ruts caused numerous crashes in every race. Shady parts of the course never thawed so
riders had to select tires that worked not only in mud, but also on ice
and snow. These conditions had some racers like Rachael Lloyd, Mo
Bruno-Roy, and Tim Johnson licking their chops as they were about to feast on the less skilled. Others cursed the course, the course designers, the
Gods, and their lack of preparation.
While this entire Cyclocross season has been extremely competitive, most pundits figured the women's race would go either to Katie Compton or Georgia Gould. I felt that six men had a shot: Jonathan Page, Tim Johnson, Jeremy Powers, Ryan Trebon, Barry Wicks, and Todd Wells. After watching the racers in their warm-ups, I was shocked to see how easily Tim and Todd were handling the conditions. Others looked a bit too cautious. I'll just let the galleries tell the race stories. Congratulations to Tim Johnson and Katie Compton. Both were incredible. Crashes may have cost Jon Page, Ryan Trebon , and Mark McCormack their respective races. |
| Congratulations to my NEBC (Northeast Bicycle Club) teammates Libby
White and Julie Lockhart who successfully defended their national titles.
Sally Annis almost made it three. Other New Englanders who won included Mo
Bruno-Roy, Tim Johnson, Jamie Driscoll, Luke Keough, and Kathy Sarvary. Finally, I would like to point to the young rising stars of the sport. Jesse Anthony will no doubt get another title one of these days. Jamie Driscoll was undefeated this year, as was Junior Luke Keogh. Amy Dombrowski grabbed the Women's U-23 title and had a very solid season. Wicks, Trebon, and Powers will go head to head for many years to come. |
| Tim Johnson had a horrible start and found himself in about 20th position rubbing elbows with the likes of Steve Tilford. Tim clawed his way forward through the masses, then passed other serious contendors on his way to joining Page at the front. Tim (shown above) went on to win his first National Championship in years. |
