I had no idea that we had to cross the Sierra Nevadas and Yosemite National Park to get to Mammoth Mountain. Guess I should have looked at a map! This road through Tioga Pass was very narrow and had no guard rails.  Mapquest said it was 5 hours 7 minutes from San Francisco.  It took about 8 hours!
The racing at Mammoth is legendary because of the 10,000 ft. elevation and the killer downhill courses.  But, the Cross Country course basically sucked.  It was a combination of fire roads and sandy singletrack.  The Super D course was fast but also you also had to deal with deep pumice, especially on all the turns.  Not much fun.  Colt double flatted in the Cross Country which cost him ten minutes as he rode half a lap on his rim.  He fared better in the Short Track (shown right) that including riding up part of the Mountain Cross course backwards!
On both ends of our trip we visited Haley in San Francisco.  In addition to sightseeing which included a cool trip to Alcatraz, we did plently of riding.  Most days we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and did some riding on the Marin County side.  The San Francisco hills were great!
Mary McConneloug won the National Cross Country Championship after an amazing year on the World Cup circuit. I think she even shocked herself.  Coming off a 5th place in the World Championships, it is no surprise.  Mary is shown here with JHK who nailed his 4th consecutive championship. Mary's guy Mike Broderick finished an amazing 7th! He has never been out of the top ten when I have been in the Feed Zone....hahah.
